Premier League Team of the Week: Defenders do damage and Salah stars again
The Premier League action continues to trundle along with another weekend of significant results affecting the top of the table and the race for Europe.
Liverpool further extended their stronghold of top spot to 15 points but were made to fight back from 1-0 down at home to rock-bottom Southampton to eventually earn a 3-1 win.
Chasing Arsenal could only earn a point as they drew 1-1 with foes Manchester United and Nottingham Forest boosted their Champions League qualification bid with a 1-0 win over Manchester City.
Elsewhere, there were narrow wins for all of Chelsea, Newcastle and Aston Villa this weekend.
Goalkeeper
Dean Henderson (Crystal Palace) 8.4
Crystal Palace had to grind down Ipswich to earn a 1-0 win and Dean Henderson was a key part of the Eagles' success.
Henderson made seven saves in the win at Selhurst Park en route to a ninth clean sheet of the season and Palace's third Premier League win in a row.
Defence
Axel Disasi (Aston Villa) 7.9
Axel Disasi put in a tremendous defensive display to help Aston Villa churn out a big three points on their travels as they beat Brentford 1-0.
The on-loan Chelsea man won eight duels, made five clearances and made several key interventions to stifle Brentford's fluid attackers.
Jan Paul van Hecke (Brighton) 8.1
Jan Paul van Hecke netted his first Brighton goal with a super header during the side's 2-1 win at home to Fulham.
The Dutchman was picked out in the box via a free-kick and he rose to nod an effort in off the post to equalise for the Seagulls in the first half.
Marc Cucurella (Chelsea) 8.0
A bit of quality from Marc Cururella turned out to be the winner for Chelsea, who were frustrated for much of their 1-0 win over Leicester.
Cucurella arrowed an effort into the far right corner out of the reach of goalkeeper Mads Hermansen to break the deadlock for the Blues.
Midfield
Mohamed Salah (Liverpool) 8.1
It wasn't one of Mohamed Salah's best outings, yet he still came away with two goals in Liverpool's comeback against Southampton.
With the Reds stunned as they trailed at half-time, the Egyptian ramped up his level to become more involved and he was on hand to dispatch two penalties.
The brace at Anfield moved him onto 243 goals for Liverpool and helped him climb up to third on the club's all-time list of scorers.
Marcus Tavernier (Bournemouth) 8.0
Marcus Tavernier produced his best performance since returning from injury in Bournemouth's 2-2 draw at Tottenham.
The 25-year-old opened the scoring for the Cherries with an excellent finish and looked a threat throughout the contest.
Nicolas Dominguez (Nottingham Forest) 7.8
Nicolas Dominguez put in the graft in central midfield for Nottingham Forest as they battled to take down Manchester City.
The Argentine mopped things up well in the middle of the pitch, recording four tackles and nine ground duels won.
Pape Matar Sarr (Tottenham) 8.0
An energetic display from Pape Matar Sarr was capped by a strange goal to drag Tottenham back into contention against Bournemouth.
The Senegal international picked up possession near the corner of the box and curled the ball in off the left-hand post - a goal only he will know was intentional or not.
Luis Diaz (Liverpool) 7.9
Luis Diaz was Liverpool's creative hub against Southampton and he had a key role in inspiring Arne Slot's side to turn things around.
The Colombian created six chances in the match, one of which was Darwin Nunez's equaliser after Diaz found him via a cutback.
Forwards
Evanilson (Bournemouth) 7.5
Brazilian striker Evanilson led the Bournemouth line expertly against Tottenham and was rewarded with a goal for his efforts.
It was a well-taken goal, too, as he strode into the area before lifting a delicate shot over the onrushing Guglielmo Vicario into the corner.
Son Heung-min (Tottenham) 7.4
On as a half-time substitute, Son Heung-min did his bit to ensure Tottenham came away with something from their Bournemouth clash.
Son earned himself a penalty after being wiped out by goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, which he stepped up and calmly converted straight down the middle.
