Drug detection scanners gulp N1bn
The Federal Government has spent over N1.2 billion on drug detection scanners at Nigeria’s major international airports in 2024.
According to details sourced from BudgIT’s accountability platform, Govspendng on Friday, a payment of N1,222,537,600.81 was made on July 8, 2024, to Aricent Integrated Solutions Ltd.
The transaction covered the supply of “two units of full-body scanners” for the Abuja and Lagos International Airports.
These scanners, equipped with advanced drug detection capabilities, are designed to identify concealed drugs and other prohibited substances on travellers, aligning with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency’s intensified efforts to combat illicit drug trafficking.
In addition to these scanners, NDLEA’s 2024 expenditure also included N796,382,723.37 paid to R2U Architects Limited for a 70 per cent consultancy fee for constructing NDLEA barracks in Enugu, Kano, and Jigawa states.
It also included N530,333,694.02 paid to Blue Sea Services Limited as a 30 per cent mobilisation fee for constructing two blocks of four-bedroom terrace flats for NDLEA directors.
