Documentary on Bishop Ajayi Crowther to debut this January (TRAILER)

Pelu Awofeso, the Nigerian travel journalist, is set to release a documentary about the hometown of Samuel Ajayi Crowther titled ‘Mission to Osoogun’. Crowther was a Sierra Leonean-Nigerian clergy celebrated as the first African Anglican bishop of West Africa. ‘Mission to Osoogun’ is the first episode of the docu-series, whose trailer was unveiled on Friday. Awofeso began filming in November 2021, driven by a passion to share Crowther’s story and appreciate his contributions as a bishop and linguist.

He disclosed that the project team visited Osoogun, Crowther’s hometown, in June 2022. The journalist said the experiences and encounters of the team in Osoogun are the focus of the first episode of the documentary. “The Baale of Osoogun and other traditional elders of the community showed us around the landmarks connected with that fateful day in 1821,” he said. “They also led us to the home of Crowther’s parents and what’s left of it.“Remarkably, what used to be a living, bustling community of 12,000 people and enclosed by a wall and five gates is now a field of corn – deserted and desolate.”

In the preview, members of the community pleaded with the government to develop the education and healthcare systems of the town. Awofeso, who won the 3020 CNN/Multichoice African Journalist Awards in the tourism reporting category, said Crowther’s story is “an inspiration and it is one I believe needs telling”. “I also believe that documentaries on historical figures, the values they stood for and the lessons they teach us are important for both the present and future generations, not just in Africa but around the world,” he added.
