LAWMA demands proper waste disposal at Yuletide

The Lagos Waste Management Authority has urged Lagos residents to properly handle and dispose of waste during the Yuletide.

LAWMA announced its readiness to tackle the expected surge in waste generation across the metropolis during the Christmas and New Year festivities.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, gave the assurance in a statement on Monday in Lagos.

Gbadegesin said the agency had put measures in place to meet the waste management needs of residents during the yuletide.

Our approach is comprehensive. We are committed to maintaining a clean environment during and after the celebrations.

“However, we need the cooperation of all residents to bag and containerise their waste properly, to facilitate efficient collection.

Sanwo-Olu urges investors to harness potential of Lagos waterways

Lagos state governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has called on investors to explore the untapped potential of the state’s waterways.

The appeal was made during the Lagos Boat Regatta 2024, held last weekend in Victoria Island.

The regatta, which featured colorful displays by the five Ibile divisions, rowing competitions, and live performances, celebrated Lagos’ vibrant aquatic and cultural heritage.

Speaking after an exploratory tour of Lagos’ waterways aboard a yacht, Governor Sanwo-Olu described the regatta as a “spectacular celebration” of Lagos’ cultural and aquatic legacy.

“This extraordinary event is not just a reflection of our cultural richness but also a vibrant showcase of Lagos’ unique connection to water an essential part of our identity and livelihood,” he said.

Lagos To Receive New Rolling Stock For Red & Blue Line Trains In 2025

The Lagos State government is set to receive new rolling stock to bolster train operations on the Red and Blue Line corridors in 2025.

Engr. Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo, Managing Director of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), outlined these plans, along with the agency’s season’s greetings to Lagosians, in a video clip.

The video, posted on the Authority’s X (formerly Twitter) page, also highlighted her plans for new buses to join the regulated fleet operated under LAMATA to better serve the transport needs of Lagos residents

“In 2025, we promise to serve you better. New buses will join our regulated fleet. New railing stock are expected to join our train operations,” Akinajo stated.

The Managing Director of LAMATA also revealed that the Lagos State government, under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is working towards the realization of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Green and Purple Lines.

LASTMA launches Whistle App to combat Lagos traffic gridlock

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has introduced the Whistle app as part of its efforts to alleviate traffic congestion and improve road safety across the state, especially with the anticipated increase in vehicular movement.

General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, explained that the app enables residents to report reckless driving, traffic violations, one-way offenses, and other disruptive incidents directly to the agency.

Bakare-Oki emphasized, “Whether stuck in traffic, witnessing an accident, or encountering a dangerous vehicle, users can quickly alert nearby LASTMA personnel. Upon receiving these reports, the agency will take swift action to manage the situation, whether it’s clearing traffic, handling accident scenes, or removing obstructive vehicles, ensuring a safer and more efficient commute.”

Sanwo-Olu vows to boost economy with tourism
The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has pledged to unlock the state’s tourism potential to boost its economic prosperity. The governor made the pledge on Saturday at the Lagos Boat Regatta 2024 with the theme, ‘’Our Water, Our heritage, Our life.” The governor, while declaring the event opened, stressed that the boat regatta, which was held across the five divisions of the state, was a shared vision of showcasing the beauty of Lagos waterways for the residents to relish at all times.

“We are indeed excited that we can finally have a boat regatta, the beginning of what will be a lot of activities that are going to happen during this Yuletide season. This one, being a very first, is a demonstration of our commitment to develop tourism potential in Lagos. “You know one-third of Lagos is surrounded by water, so we need to be able to use our waterways not only as a means of transportation but as a strong ecosystem for tourism, and today, you will be seeing displays of various sizes of water infrastructure and display of boat regattas from the five divisions of Lagos.

“It is going to be a day and afternoon of sheer tourism, fun and understanding the beauty of the waterways of Lagos. Let us relax, sit back and enjoy the beauty of serenity and tourism potential of the state and the hospitality of Lagos.” Earlier, the Commissioner for Tourism , Arts and Culture, Toke Benson-Awoyinka, said the Lagos Boat Regatta 2024 aimed to immerse participants in the rich culture of the state’s waterway. Awoyinka said the event served as a driver of economic growth to boost tourism and create opportunities for local businesses and it further cements Lagos’ reputation as a premier global destination.

VIDEO: Lagos cracks down on street traders, miscreants
The Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, also known as KAI, carried out an enforcement operation to dislodge street traders and miscreants under the Oba Akran Bridge in Ikeja and the Falomo underbridge.

This was announced by the state Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, on X.com on Monday.

The effort aims to maintain law and order in the state and ensure compliance with environmental sanitation laws.

Wahab wrote, “Operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps dislodging street traders and miscreants under the Oba Akran Bridge, Ikeja and the Falomo underbridge.”
